This website aims to introduce a unique photographic archive and the work that has been done to preserve and present it. The project started in 2013 and has included two exhibitions (in London and Hanoi) and a book, ‘Hanoi After the War’, published in Vietnamese, English and French-language editions. The entire archive has been transferred to the Ecole française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO) and is available to view on their website. You can find out more about the project on this site. As of 2024 the project is now less active, but you can keep up to date by following our blog and Facebook page.

“Taken together, side by side, the pictures, the Vietnamese stories and the captions operating through the canvas of a Phai painting produce a moving experience. Few pictures books pull this off. And it’s all in black and white.”
Christopher Goscha, Mekong Review August 2018
