The photos taken by John in Hanoi between 1980 and 1982 are now available to view here on the website of the Ecole française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO). 1645 photos are presented with captions and other details. There is also a search function so the collection can be searched by keyword, e.g. ‘temple’. Together with the books in Vietnamese, English and French, we hope this online archive will make the photos accessible to an even wider audience.
A new home for the archive
The entire archive has been transferred to the French School of Asian Studies (EFEO) in Paris. It will become part of the EFEO’s unique image bank and will in due course be available to researchers online. After 40 years this unique collection has found a permanent home.

Hanoi Après la Guerre has additional photographs, a new layout and updated texts.
This French edition is published by Magellan et Cie in association with EFEO (The French School of Asian Studies).
It is available from mid-November in bookshops and from online retailers.
This French edition marks a new future for this unique archive of 1700 photographs. It will be curated from now on by the EFEO and available in due course on their website.
